Freelance Web Design – How to Get More Clients
So you’re an aspiring web designer who’s just gone freelance and would like to know how to get clients? Well, this article is for you.
Step One
Right listen. The first thing you’ll need is a website which provides details about the products and services that you sell. Next, you need a portfolio. Start thinking about who you know who would like a website. Provide them with a freebie and ask them to tell the people they know about the great job you’ve done.
Step Two
Know your target market. Know your competitors. Think about who you are targeting. Is it local businesses? How many other companies are offering web design. What differentiates you from them? Find out your unique selling points (USP). It might be that you provide a quick turnaround, offer the best quality or the best prices.
Step Three
Once you know who you’re selling to then start to make them aware of your presence. You need business cards and other forms of marketing materials such as flyers, letterheads, even pens with your logo on. Next step is to get on the phone, go to networking events, go to shows, drop leaflets in letterboxes, do absolutely everything you can think of to begin to grow awareness about your web design services. Then test marketing method which works best for you.
Step Four
Know your strengths and weaknesses. Then develop yourself. If you are shy on the phone then push yourself. You might never be the best telemarketing person but you can become the best that you can be. Make that your aim. If you’re more comfortable face to face then attend networking events. But remember you’re a freelancer now and your time is, therefore, finite so choose carefully which networking events you attend.
Step Five
Once work starts to come in do the best job you can. Ask for referrals from happy customers!
